A common proverb repeated around the temple is “Work delayed causes regret.” I am not certain the origin of it, but everyone knows it as it is commonly spoken when someone is being lazy or procrastinating. And, there is no finer example of this than the Freaky Fryer meter inserts on Elvira: House of Horrors. The inserts of the meter are yellow, but the signs right next to each insert progress in a gradient from yellow for the bottom sign to orange for the top sign. It’s a strange visual disconnect between literally adjacent playfield elements.
Of course, the longer I played Elvira, the more this unharmonious playfield element bothered me, until I had to correct it. And so, I set about making a bracket with 5 progressively more orange inserts that blend with the all-yellow playfield inserts to create a gradient progression for the inserts that match the signs next to each insert. The result was stunning and completely natural from the first time I installed the bracket.
You can receive the benefit of my work by purchasing the bracket and installing it on your machine without the need for screws – it simply slides over the circuit board standoffs in that area. The whole process takes perhaps 10-15 minutes and in the end, the inserts will look as if they were always designed to be that way. Visual harmony is immediately gifted to that area of the playfield as a result of this bracket. My only regret is that I did not do the work to fix this sooner. And with that, I have become the proverb verifier, through no effort of my own.
